Start with the destination
Sanya covers distinct areas along the coast, so save the Chinese name, full address and any note about which gate or entrance to use. The written address and map pin help you choose the right pickup point.
- Allow extra time when you’re crossing bay areas, travelling in peak holiday season, or heading to a fixed-time event.
- For a sense of which coast suits you, see the guide to Sanya’s beaches.
DiDi and taxis
DiDi is usually the easiest option: you get a pickup pin, destination, fare estimate and a recorded trip. A street taxi still helps when your phone or payment setup isn’t working.
- Choose a pickup point beside a road where a car can stop; a pin inside a resort lobby or pedestrian promenade may be out of reach.
- Match the plate number and car shown in the app before you get in.
- For a taxi, show the destination in Chinese and use the meter rather than agreeing an unclear flat fare.
- Book DiDi in the DiDi Greater China app, or through Alipay or WeChat. The DiDi China app supports foreign mobile numbers and international cards according to China’s expatriate guide. Some orange street taxis with the “Hainan Trusted Pay” logo advertise foreign cards and Apple Pay — keep a backup anyway.

Buses and the tram
Buses reach the city and the main bay areas. The tram runs on a more limited line between the urban area and Sanya Railway Station. Use a live map to plan with current routes.
- Check the route direction on the stop sign or live map.
- Pay with the bus code in Alipay or WeChat, or carry small RMB notes where cash is accepted.
- Airport buses serve the city centre and major bays; use the designated counter and the route shown for your destination.

Airport and train stations

Sanya Phoenix International Airport connects to Phoenix Airport railway station. The city also has Sanya, Yalong Bay and Yazhou stations — the station on your ticket matters as much as the departure time.
- Sanya Station: main city hub; practical for downtown and much of Sanya Bay.
- Phoenix Airport Station: for air–rail transfers at the airport.
- Yalong Bay Station: useful for the Yalong Bay side; many resorts still need a road transfer afterwards.
- Yazhou Station: western Sanya and the Yazhou area.

Crossing between bays
Your address shapes the day. Before choosing where to stay, compare a few real journeys at the times you’d make them, including trips for meals, events or the school run.
- Compare a direct DiDi or taxi with the bus for the same trip.
- Resort shuttles vary by property, guest access and booking requirements.
- For a late event, plan a return ride while services are still running.
Area trade-offs: Sanya’s beaches.
Driving yourself
An International Driving Permit alone is not enough in mainland China. You need a Chinese licence or Hainan’s temporary driving permit, confirmed with the local authority. Confirm the permit before you reserve a car.
- Read the current official self-driving guidance before you reserve a car.
- Permit, Chinese licence translation, insurance, deposit and named-driver rules vary by rental company.
- For the full temporary-permit steps and Sanya collection details, see the Living in Sanya guide.
