First steps and accommodation registration
Keep your passport and the Chinese name and address of your accommodation accessible. Hotels register foreign guests at reception; if you stay somewhere other than a hotel, China’s National Immigration Administration says the accommodation registration should be completed with local public security within 24 hours.
- Ask the host for the complete address in Chinese, including the building or community name.
- Confirm who will handle accommodation registration before relying on a private rental or informal stay.

Phone and payments
A working phone number and at least two ways to pay make the first days much easier. Current central-government guidance says foreign nationals can apply for a SIM at the service offices of the major telecom operators using a passport or other accepted identity document.
- Alipay and WeChat Pay support linking eligible international bank cards; verification, limits and fees depend on the app and card issuer.
- Keep some RMB cash and a physical card as backups while a new mobile-payment setup is being tested.
- Check the current China government living guide and the Sanya Tourism Board payment guide rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Getting around
Sanya stretches across several bays and resort corridors, so two places that both say “Sanya” can still be far apart. Save the exact destination in Chinese before starting a trip.
- AMap is useful for local navigation; DiDi provides ride-hailing; China Railway 12306 is the official rail-ticket platform.
- Check the pickup pin and final destination with the driver before the car moves, especially when two venues have similar translated names.
- Use current operator information for airport transfers, intercity trains and other time-sensitive connections. The Sanya Tourism Board app guide is a useful starting list.
Useful Chinese
A saved address and one clear question are often more useful than a long phrase list. Show written Chinese alongside any spoken attempt, particularly for destinations and apartment compounds.
- Show the written address as well as trying to say it.
- Keep questions short and give the other person time to read.
- Use translation tools as a bridge, then confirm important details in writing.
Meeting people and joining the community
Sanya’s international community is spread across work, sport, family, language and social groups rather than one permanent “expat area.” Start with activities you would enjoy anyway and favour listings with a named organiser and complete details.

Understand the city before crossing it
Daily life differs between downtown, Dadonghai, Sanya Bay, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay and the historic west. Start with the city’s bays and districts, then decide which wider Hainan trips deserve a separate day or overnight stay.
- Use the Sanya areas and southern Hainan maps for geographic orientation, not turn-by-turn navigation.
- Lingshui, Baoting, Wuzhishan, Ledong and Wanning each need realistic transport and time planning.
- Recheck attraction operations and transport close to the day of travel.
