West Island

西岛(Xī Dǎo)

Best for: a beach day with local life mixed in. Walk or cycle through fishing-village lanes, stop at cafés, then continue to Niuwangling for open-sea views. Watersports are there if you want them — they don’t have to own the day.

  • Ferry terminal: West Island Visitor Centre at Xiaoqi Port (肖旗港西岛游客中心). The nearby residents’ and cargo pier is not the tourist entrance.
  • Adult ticket: ¥95, including admission and the return ferry.
  • Timing: published hours 08:00–17:30; crossing about 10–15 minutes. The ticket page currently lists 19:00 as the last return, although ferry times can change.
  • Avoid the queues: busy periods are officially 10:30–13:30 outbound and 16:00–18:00 returning. An 08:00–09:00 start gives the easiest margin.
  • Getting around: walking or cycling works well in the village. A sightseeing cart helps in the heat, or if you want Niuwangling with less walking.
  • Swimming: only in the marked bathing area, and only when staff and same-day signs say it’s open.
Today’s ferry service: In WeChat, search 三亚放心游 and open 景区客流可视化 for West Island’s entry status, weather notices and live queue views. Check the operator’s last return sailing for your visit. How to use the official service.

Wuzhizhou Island

蜈支洲岛(Wúzhīzhōu Dǎo)

Best for: diving and watersports. It’s polished and busy — and the easiest island here to spend far more than the base ticket once you start booking activities.

Want rays or sharks? Wuzhizhou sells a paid ray-feeding experience — marketed with the local name 魔鬼鱼 (“devil rays”), not as confirmed mantas. Wild blacktip reef sharks are a seasonal summer visitor: a July 2026 government report described them returning to the island’s designated shallow-water observation corridor. That is a wild sighting, not a show, so they may not appear on your day. Keep your distance, don’t touch or chase wildlife, and never stand on coral.

  • Ferry terminal: Wuzhizhou Visitor Centre (蜈支洲岛游客中心) beside Houhai. Follow island signs for the return pier — summer and winter boarding can differ.
  • Adult ticket: from ¥136, including admission and the return ferry. Diving, watersports and carts are extra.
  • Boat times: outbound listed 08:30–16:00, returns 09:00–19:30, weather permitting. Ferry times can change with conditions.
  • Sightseeing carts: ¥60 buys one seated 25–30-minute circuit with no stops. The ¥138 City Walk stops at coastal viewpoints, but it’s still one circuit — not unlimited hop-on, hop-off.
  • Without a cart: stay around the bathing beach and nearby walking area. Parts of the protected coast can’t be reached on foot.
  • Swimming: one designated bathing area; it can close when the sea is rough.
  • Boarding rules: the operator currently refuses boarding to pregnant visitors, people aged 70 or over, wheelchair users, and people with several listed medical or recent-surgery risks.
Go early: first ferries are consistently the better call. Tour groups, heat and activity queues build through late morning. Bring water or a snack if you want to skip the higher island prices.

Boundary Island

分界洲岛(Fēnjièzhōu Dǎo)

Best for: clear water, cliff views and marine attractions. It’s about 70 km from Sanya, so the transfer makes this a full-day trip.

Want rays or sharks? Boundary Island’s coral aquarium, marine theatre and paid animal encounters use managed or captive animals — not wild sightings. The island sells a shallow-water ray encounter (also labelled 魔鬼鱼, not confirmed mantas) and keeps blacktip sharks in the marine theatre. Recent visitors say the ray session is short, and the animals may stay away when the water is crowded.

  • Ferry terminal: Boundary Island Visitor Centre (分界洲岛旅游区游客中心) beside the G98 Niuling exit. DiDi or a hired car is simplest.
  • Train option: high-speed rail to Lingshui, then the operator’s free shuttle or a taxi. A direct Sanya shuttle also runs with advance booking.
  • Adult ticket: ¥127 off-season or ¥132 in peak season, including admission and the return ferry.
  • Timing: published daytime hours 08:30–17:30; crossing about 15 minutes.
  • Getting around: the island is hilly. Recent visitors put the sightseeing cart around ¥40, but that price is not on a current official page.
  • Plan the day: beach and viewpoints plus one paid activity — diving, snorkeling, a semi-submersible reef trip or the marine area — beats buying a big bundle without reading the fine print.
Weather note: Boundary Island publishes full and partial weather closures at short notice, so a ferry day can change even after the journey is planned.

Other nearby islands

You’ll see these names while planning. None works like the three straightforward ferry trips above.

  • Nanwan Monkey Island (南湾猴岛): actually a Lingshui peninsula, reached from Xincun by cable car or a short boat-and-shuttle ride. Adult entry is currently ¥147. The harbour view is a highlight; the macaques are part of a managed attraction, not a wild-island day.
  • Jiajing Island (加井岛): an uninhabited reef off Shimei Bay with no public ferry. Book only through a licensed operator, confirm permit and insurance, and check whether the trip actually includes landing.
  • Dazhou Island (大洲岛): a protected marine reserve — tourist landings are not allowed. Ignore informal boats offering landing, fishing or diving there.
  • Phoenix Island (凤凰岛): the high-rise harbour development you see from Sanya Bay. It’s bridge-linked, not a beach-and-ferry island day.
